Nine Nifty, Neato, Natalicious Months*

As of yesterday, Natalie is nine months old. The basket pictures are getting harder to take. She's crawling all over, trying to talk, and can point to the picture of the cat in her books when asked. She yells in frustration and indignation when we eat something without offering it to her. She eats with gusto and makes fabulous messes. She grins and laughs and charms random strangers on the metro.

Her official stats will be recorded next Tuesday. However, she had an appointment with an allergist this morning (persistent sneezing, snuffly nose, etc. + family history--they're going to run some blood tests but aren't overly concerned), so we have rough stats to report. 25 lbs (using the weigh mom and baby and subtract mom method) and just shy of 28 inches. She's well off the growth charts in weight, but slipping percentiles in height. We're a little concerned that this will cause the ped to get on our case about her weight next week. I'm starting to gather my retorts now. Any suggestions?

*Props to Art for the alliterative adjective assistance!

  • De-lurking ... great blog! I love reading about Natalie, I have a son who's ten months so it's great to hear what others his age are doing.

He is also off the charts in terms of height, and only recently on the charts (just!) in terms of weight. I've heard that babies are supposed to be at their chubbiest at about nine months; then they start crawling and walking more and start losing it. I hope the pediatrician doesn't say anything, 'cause it sounds to me like you've just got a great healthy daughter. :)

  • Why would they be on your case? She looks perfectly healthy to me. Is she still breast fed? My neice was a huge baby - 9 lb 11 oz at birth and off the charts with everything as an infant. She had massive fat rolls all over her and dimples forever. Once she started walking she grew really tall and lost all the fat as it converted to height. At the age of five she wears a size 7 because she is a solid and tall child, but definitely not fat. I wouldn't be concerned about weight at this stage - she'll probably be really tall soon!

  • My son is a couple of weeks older than Natalie and 21 lbs. but only 27 inches. He's short and stubby! The pediatrician didn't get on our case at all, just said he's healthy. Hopefully Natalie will get the same reaction. We love our chubby babies!

  • Yeah, she's just a baby and will grow like she needs to for the first 2 years or so. IF she goes exceessively off of the charts, then you start to keep an eye on her. Until then, she's just growing like she needs to!

  • Yay for Nat, in all her glory!
I have opposite problems with weight over here! I would say, unless she wanders more than two deviations on the charts either way, they usually just use the "wait and watch" method. But if they give you a hard time, I would either just 1)listen and nod to the ped speech and then do what I want or 2)tell the doc that you don't see a problem right now with her weight but are certainly open to watching out for any problems as she approaches 2 yrs (=screw you, I'm doing what I want for now) or 3)explain your pov in detail, and if doc doesn't like it look for a new one. I myself would go with option #1. I used to be a #3, but as time has gone on, I've learned to tune things out.
Lots of love to you 3!

  • Just tell her that MP3 is a chunker too, had a VERY concerned Ped, and now that she's walking, she is actually CURVING on the growth charts, and not continuing to just climb up up up.

ALSO - if you look at a growth chart for BOYS, Malka and Nat are just fine - in the 95th percentile.

Our Ped had us cut back on the dairy, ie: ounces per day, and we did for a while, and it helped, but it's really not such a bother. You can also do what we do - just say "yeah, uh huh, sure" and then continue to do your own thing.

Malka is, at least as of Dec. 18, 30 pounds, and only 30 inches tall - SAME track as Nat - and since you BF, you may not get the "reducing the ounces" discussion.

Crossing fingers that it will be an easy meeting.

And it REALLY is true what they say - once they start walking, the energy put out begins to equalize, and they tend to even out a bit...

  • Once Arden started walking she slimmed down ... her gain has been slloooow since she became mobile. I'm guessing they won't give you any grief about Miss Natalie! She's fabulous and gorgeous. 9 months already? Crazy.

    XO,
    Erin

  • Different pediatricians react differently to weight. My son was off the charts for weight. He is now right on track and solid. The more she moves, the more the baby fat will go away.

  • our girls are probably close to the same size. after ryan's 9 month check up, she started thinning out and at her 1 yr check up, she actually got BACK ON THE CHART for the first time in weight since her 1st check-in. We were very excited. She's now 95th% on both height and weight rather than 95 in height which she's been from the beginning and over 100 on weight. She's now 27.5 lbs at 13 months and 31.5 inches long i believe. I think the fat rolls are serving as springs and they've started unrolling ; )
